How to Choose the Right Forklift Capacity?

Choosing the correct forklift capacity is essential for safe operation, equipment longevity, and efficient handling of your loads. Selecting a forklift with insufficient capacity can lead to accidents, while over-specifying may increase unnecessary cost.


Here are the key factors you should consider:


1. Maximum Load Weight

The first step is to clearly define the maximum weight of the loads you will handle.

Always consider the heaviest possible load, not just the average. Forklifts should never be operated at or beyond their rated capacity, as this can cause instability or tipping.


2. Load Center Distance

The load center is the distance from the face of the forks to the center of gravity of the load.

  • Standard pallets usually have a load center of 500mm or 600mm

  • The farther the load center is from the mast, the lower the actual lifting capacity becomes

3. Lifting Height

As the lifting height increases, the lifting capacity decreases.

  • Some attachments shift the load center forward, reducing stability

Never rely only on the nominal tonnage (e.g., 3 ton or 5 ton). The real working capacity depends on load center, lift height, and attachments.
